ARTIST BIO

Creating sculptures and installations that emphasize the hidden, Janet Levy engages metaphors and dualities to conceptualize suggestive and seductive sculptural works. She conducts extensive research on her subjects' themes: mythology, geology, zoology and other literary sources to inform her work, creating works on paper collages and drawings. Referencing a physical force in nature to convey the emotions of underlying pressures, tensions and desires her work focuses on the physical exploration of stone. Levy expresses an inherent desire to reveal what is concealed; not only in a psychological context but with the material itself . She carves, binds, and hangs stone often in combination with other materials such as rope, chain, shells, branches, metal, found objects, and cast bronze.

Levy’s sculptural practice exists in a continual state of transformation where past and present collide. Essential to her process is the gathering and collecting of materials from local sources. She continues to explore the enduring focus within her practice: to make the invisible visible.
