ARTIST BIO

Malisa Humphrey was born in Berkeley, California and lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She received her MFA from the University of California, San Diego and her BA from the University of California, Berkeley. Her interdisciplinary practice explores how power is expressed in historical, visual culture. Beginning with depictions of colonialism and conquest embedded in interior decor, architecture and civic art, she manipulates and reconfigures these images and objects to fabricate alternative iterations as photographs, drawings, paintings, sculptures, installations and collages. She interrogates the function of these source images as class signifiers in homes and fortifications of power in state and federal buildings. Her work has been exhibited and screened at the Armory Center for the Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the Hammer Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla, the Oakland Museum, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and the Banff Centre for the Arts.
