Mamie Tinkler lives and works in New York, NY. She graduated from Columbia University with a BA in 2000 and obtained an MFA from Hunter College in 2005. Tinkler’s work has been exhibited at solo and group exhibitions including Ulterior Gallery, New York, NY (solo, 2020); The Armory Show, New York, NY (2020); The Suburban, Oak Park, IL (solo, 2015); The Good Earth at Kerry Schuss, New York, NY (2015); Days Inn at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York, NY (2014); and Drawings, Drawings, Photographs at Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York, NY (2011). Her 2020 solo exhibition at Ulterior Gallery was featured in the New York Times and Artforum.

Mamie Tinkler created this piece during the pandemic. She started to pay close attention to the nature surrounding the cottage, where she spent much time in 2020 and 2021, away from the city. In the process, Tinkler uses a camera—she photographs the image and re-interprets the photographic print into a watercolor painting. By shooting the image with a camera, Tinkler selects the focus of the image and expands the elements to establish a subversive and lyrical landscape.
