ARTIST BIO

Leslie Lanxinger is influenced by outsider performance art such as burlesque and vaudeville and the ways that they continue to be relevant in popular culture. Her favorite vaudevillian influence is the Muppet Show. Between 1999 and 2006 she interviewed and worked alongside burlesque and underground artists and activists in New York City. Theatricality, transformation, feminism, and dark humor remain constant themes in her work, and are the impetus for her practice.

Lanxinger received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and BFA from the Atlanta College of Art. Select residencies and awards include the Franklin Furnace Award, the Brooklyn Arts Council, and the San Francisco Center for Cultural Innovation; The Atlantic Center for the Arts, Arteles Creative Center in Haukijärvi Finland, and the Brand Associate Patron Award. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
